Bighill, Kentucky: Where Every Hill Tells a Story.
Bighill, Kentucky, is an unincorporated community in Madison County, uniquely positioned at the junction of Kentucky Route 21 and U.S. Route 421 along the Jackson County border. Its strategic location once made it a focal point during the Civil War—most notably during the Big Hill Skirmish on August 23, 1862, when roughly 650 Confederate cavalry under General E. Kirby Smith clashed with a smaller Union force led by Colonel Leonidas Metcalfe, setting the stage for the decisive Battle of Richmond. Local landmarks such as the historic Cox-Simpson House, once a hospital for wounded soldiers and now an integral part of the Big Hill Welcome Center, preserve this rich wartime legacy. Today, Bighill continues to captivate visitors with its enduring rural charm and agricultural heritage, blending a storied past with a peaceful contemporary lifestyle that epitomizes the spirit of Bighill, Kentucky.
Bighill Farm is a living testament to our family’s enduring entrepreneurial spirit and deep roots in Kentucky. For decades, my grandfather, Willard Alexander, operated Alexander Gas and Groceries along Battlefield Memorial Highway—a cherished community hub that fueled not only vehicles but also local pride. His ventures extended into livestock and tobacco farming, embodying the resourcefulness and dedication that have long defined Bighill.
Building on that proud legacy, our modern operations now focus exclusively on raising chickens and quail. This shift to sustainable poultry farming reflects our commitment to self-sufficiency and to providing the community with high-quality, farm-fresh eggs at an affordable price. We invite you to join us in celebrating the rich history, community values, and agricultural traditions that make Bighill, Kentucky, such a special place.
